Dharma Bum Temple, 4144 Campus Ave., San Diego, CA 92103

It is a tremendous honor to welcome Roshi Fleet Maull to the Dharma Bum Temple Wednesday March 14th at 7pm.

This talk is designed to address our toughest social, cultural, environmental and political challenges from the perspective of the sacredness of our world and the innate basic goodness of all beings. Using skills grounded in Shambhala meditation, emotional intelligence and current neuroscience (especially interpersonal neurobiology), participants will train in increasing their capacity for mindsight*, interoception, presencing, empathy, compassion, deep listening, rapport, genuine dialogue and resonant leadership. We will explore the meaning of unconditional confidence and discover the bravery and fearlessness needed to face our toughest challenges with open heartedness, compassion, skillful means and wisdom.

*Mindsight is a term coined by neurobiologist Dr. Dan Siegel to describe our human capacity to perceive the mind of the self and others, understand our inner lives with more clarity, integrate the brain, effectively manage our emotions and enhance our relationships with others.

Fleet Maull has been a student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche since 1977 and is now a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He is currently completing his dissertation for a Ph.D in social psychology. Fleet founded Prison Dharma Network (now Prison Mindfulness Institute) in 1989 while serving a 14.5 year mandatory-minimum sentence for drug smuggling at a maximum security federal prison medical facility. He led a twice weekly meditation group in the prison chapel for 14 years (1985 – 1999). He also helped start the first inside prison hospice program and provided daily care to dying prisoners until his release. In 1991, he founded National Prison Hospice Association, launching a movement that now includes hospice programs in over 75 state and federal prisons.

Fleet also founded the Center for Contemplative End of Life Care Programs at Naropa University in 2003. He served on the Naropa University faculty from 1999 to 2009, teaching courses in psychology, meditation, and socially engaged Buddhism.

Fleet is also a Dharma successor of Zen master and social entrepreneur, Roshi Bernie Glassman. As a Zen peacemaker, he serves as a spirit holder of the annual Bearing Witness Retreat at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland and leads street retreats and other bearing witness retreats.

Fleet is the author of Dharma in Hell, the Prison Writings of Fleet Maull and numerous articles and book chapters in the fields of corrections, end of life care and socially engaged Buddhism.

Acharya Maull has written many articles and given numerous interviews on a variety of prison related topics in publications such as the Shambhala Sun, Tricycle, Tikkun, Hospice Journal and Turning Wheel. He has also been a guest on NPR’s Fresh Air program and other radio and television programs. His story was included in Roshi Bernie Glassman’s book, Bearing Witness .
