The Recovery Book Study Group, currently reading The Zen of Recovery by Mel Ash. Beginning with a 20 minute group meditation, then reading and discussion every Thursday 7:00 to 8:30 PM free and open to all.
Author Mel Ash, in his Zen of Recovery gives us an unflinching personal narrative of some his experience as an abused youth, through his years of alcohol addiction. Bottoming out, he embraced 12 Step work, and integrated Zen Buddhism into a successful recovery. A dharma teacher, he goes on to make Zen thought and practice accessible to newcomers. The synthesis of 12 Steps with the 8 Fold Path and other aspects of Zen will give the “old timer” valuable tools for long term recovery. While his primary addiction was alcohol, he was well acquainted with drugs. His book is invaluable to those with other addictions, such as narcotics, eating disorders, and other compulsive behaviors. He blends his authentic knowledge of Eastern teachings with a distinctly Western view. There is something for everyone, be they mildly interested in a slight acquaintance with Zen or the experienced practitioner enjoying this fresh take. There are instructions in meditation. At moments playful, there is always sincere, serious intent, to awareness, to full and lasting recovery. The style is unadorned and straight forward, the voice honest and clear. Highly acclaimed, this is a book one may particularly enjoy, while learning, relearning much to apply in improving life.
