Finding Stillness: Reflections from Recent Weekend Retreat Guests

Over the past few months, we have welcomed guests from many different backgrounds to spend a weekend in reflection, meditation, and practice at the Dharma Bum Temple. Some arrived exhausted from busy lives, some were searching for clarity, and others simply wanted a quiet place to breathe and reconnect with themselves. Again and again, we hear the same thing from retreat participants: the experience of slowing down, practicing together, and stepping away from constant noise creates space for something deeply healing.

One guest shared:

“I didn’t realize how overwhelmed I was until I sat in silence during the morning meditation. By the second day, I felt calmer than I have in years.”

Morning meditation is often one of the most impactful parts of the retreat experience. Guests begin the day in stillness as the temple slowly wakes with the sunrise. The quiet atmosphere helps many people settle their minds and reconnect with the present moment.

Another recent retreat participant reflected:

“There was something powerful about meditating before speaking to anyone. The silence felt supportive instead of uncomfortable. It gave me permission to finally slow down.”

Guests also describe the temple grounds and Zen garden training as meaningful parts of the weekend. Working mindfully in the garden becomes a meditation in itself, an opportunity to practice presence through simple, intentional activity.

One participant wrote afterward:

"The Zen garden training surprised me the most. Raking gravel and caring for the garden sounds simple, but it became deeply meditative. I found myself completely present.”

Another guest shared:

“The temple has a kind of silence that feels alive. Not empty, peaceful. I could finally hear my own thoughts clearly.”

Weekend retreats at Dharma Bum Temple are designed not as escapes from life, but as opportunities to reconnect with it more honestly and compassionately. Through meditation, mindful work practice, and reflection, guests often leave feeling grounded, refreshed, and more connected to themselves.

As one retreat guest beautifully summarized:

“I came here mentally exhausted and left feeling like I had space inside myself again.”

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has joined us for retreat practice and entrusted us with part of their journey. Your openness, vulnerability, and presence help make Dharma Bum Temple a living community of practice.
