A 99 year-old building on a 10,000 square foot lot with 6,300 square feet of structure. It would have been demolished in 2017 and turned into condos, but The Dharma Bums purchased it and gave it new life. After being downtown for 10 years, what have we done since moving the Dharma Bum Temple to this property nearly 10 years ago?
A new HVAC unit and mini-splits, new TPO roof, new solar panels, new electrical throughout most of the building, new plumbing where needed, 90% of the building’s windows have been restored or replaced to match the original architectural integrity, some of the original flooring has been refinished, old carpeted areas have been replaced at entryway, removed old carpet exposing the original flooring, A/V system installed for streaming meditation classes, including a drop down screen for projecting special guests and films, new flooring installed where necessary, new toilets installed, new fire safety enhancements, new security lighting and alarm system for safety, new ceiling fans throughout the building, new main shrine statues and wood bases, new doors and locks where necessary, new paint on the entire outside of the building and many areas inside, new concrete side yard and drain pipes to help with water leaks, new oven and stove, new refrigerator, new filtered water system, 2 new water heaters, new sump pump, new wall (twice) to create the Buddha for You Gift Shop, complete renovation of an old stage into a new Buddha for You meditation hall (twice for expansion) including new flooring, lighting, railing and chairs, new lender library with one of the largest selections of Buddhist books you will find now with an online catalog, new functional office space, new renovated retreat spaces for up to 6 people including 2 new bathrooms with new tile flooring, showers, sinks and toilets plus washer/dryer for residents, new bike rack, new landscaping, new irrigation drip system, new concrete walkway, new underground water line, new mini Zen garden with bench, new traditional Japanese Zen Meditation Garden, Buddhist flag installed, new temple gate, a Bodhi Tree, an Ipe Tree, new fountain, removal of neighbors gas lines from our property, and new Japanese Holly plants.
This is a quick run down of some of the things we have done at the Dharma Bum Temple since we moved here April 15th, 2017. And some people think I just sit and meditate all day haha!
When we hold year-end fundraisers these are some of the many things your donations support. It is because of your donations we are able to sustain, strengthen and care for this incredible property. Maintaining the property and keeping it safe and healthy for all has been a lot of work and requires tremendous resources. I hope you will consider a year-end donation so we can continue to maintain the property.
Thank you to everyone who has made this possible, we are here because of you and will continue to make you proud. Please donate and support this sacred space!
